In the dystopian city of Palem are held televised bloodthirsty "games", a competition in which two teenagers are chosen from each of the twelve district to fight to death, in order to entertain the monarchy. Katniss Everdeen, living in one of the poorest districts, participates in order to replace her sister, who was originally chosen.
